Korean Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (KAFPRS) was founded on November 13th, 2010, to systematically establish the clinical field of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and to promote academic advancement and solidarity among members. Conception of our society can be traced back to The Korean Society of Facial Surgery Research that was founded on July 21st, 1999, by Professor Min Yanggi. At the time, there were few members who specialized in facial plastic surgery. However, over the next 10 years, clinical results and research on facial plastic and reconstructive surgery saw a dramatic increase due to popularization of rhinoplasty by otorhinolaryngologists, as well as a rise in members participating in workshops or long-term training overseas. In addition to such advancement in research, the need for national representation in international academia—factoring in that facial plastic surgery is a central part of international conferences in otorhinolaryngology, and that associations of facial plastic surgery specialists exist in Asian countries like Philippines, Thailand, and Taiwan, as well as the U.S. and Europe—indicated the need for an independent organization of facial plastic surgeons. Responding to this need, Professors Jang Taeyoung, Dong Heonjong, Jang Yongju, and Gang Jegu held the first preliminary meeting on September 16th, 2009, and formally motioned for establishment of Korean Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery.
Since then, Doctors Jeong Donghak and Moon Hyungjin joined our Society as private-practitioner representatives; and seven members, including Chair Dong HeonJong and Assistant Chair Jin Hongryul, formed a commission under the working title of The Preparatory Committee for the Korean Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery. The Committee discussed various elements of successful establishment of such an organization, including the nature, structure, and administration of the Academy, over 12 meetings through October 19th, 2010. Once the fundamental nature of the Academy was established, the seventh meeting, held on April 7th, 2010 at Samsung Medical Center, took the form of a public hearing with roughly 30 university professors and private practitioners participating in a discussion on the ideas of the Academy. On May 17th, at the ninth meeting of the Committee, 42 members of the Society who supported the Academy reviewed and discussed the articles and rules of the future organization as created by the Committee.
It took more than one year for the Academy to be founded because accordance with private practitioners was necessary due to the nature of the field of facial plastic surgery and also due to need for a discourse with other medical societies (e.g., Korean Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Korean Rhinologic Society). After presentation of the positive expected effects of the Academy—academic expansion of otorhinolaryngology as a field, continued influx of distinguished resident surgeons, and contribution to national health and well-being—as well as the previously mentioned necessities on the national scale, the Committee gained the support of Professor Choi Eunchang, Chairman of Korean Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
Finally, on November 13th, 2010, 145 otorhinolaryngology specialists gathered at Seoul National University Hospital in a general assembly. Professor Jang Taeyoung was named the Founding President, and the bylaws were written and enacted. With the support of the chairman of Korean Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery; the president of Korean Association of Private Medical Practitioners; and the presidents of Otology, Rhinology, and Head-and-Neck-Surgery Academies, the Korean Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (KAFPRS) was officially founded. Since then, KAFPRS has been promoting academic exchange among members through semiannual conferences—the first of which was held on April 17th, 2011—along with seminars for members and resident surgeons, and “Hot Cases in Facial Plastic Surgery” case-study forums. Today, five research divisions (otoplasty and ear reconstruction, rhinoplasty, ophthalmoplasty, noninvasive facioplasty, and facial rejuvenation) operate under KAFPRS.
